Your Instructor
I’m Greg Robbins, a luthier specialising in electric guitars and basses.
I have been teaching this class for more than five years and have guided over 125 students through the process of building their first instrument.
My aim is to help you understand each stage of the process, work safely and make your own decisions with confidence. I want you to finish the class with a better understanding of how an electric guitar is built, how it works and how it is set up—and to feel inspired to design and build guitars of your own.

Frequently-asked questions
-
No. The course is designed as an introduction to electric-guitar luthiery. We are experienced luthiers and we will guide you through each step of the building process, with a focus on tool safety.
-
Yes. You will start with a solid timber blank and carry out the body construction, finishing, assembly, electronics and setup work yourself.
We use a prefabricated neck so that the learning process can be completed within two days.
-
Yes. The aim is for you to finish on Sunday with your instrument fully assembled, set up and ready to play.
You may later decide to apply an additional finish to the instrument, such as paint, stain, oil or shellac. We can advise you on how to achieve good results.
-
Yes. Left-handed guitars and basses are welcome. Please let us know when booking so we have enough time to source the correct parts for your instrument.
-
The skills you learn during the course will enable you to undertake future projects using any design you choose.
The time available during the course is limited, so we use templates and components that we know will fit correctly and produce a reliable result.
For this reason, students must work with the models and designs established for the course.
A custom guitar may be possible as part of a private course. If you are interested in this option, please contact us.
-
Of course—you can apply the finish of your choice to the guitar body after completing the workshop, if you wish.
During the workshop, we apply several coats of shellac as a sealer. Different finishing systems have different requirements and can take considerable time to complete, so we do not apply them during the workshop itself.
We can advise you on how to achieve the finish you want.
-
We use AlNiCo single-coil pickups. They are unbranded, but they sound excellent and have the characteristic sound associated with a vintage Telecaster.
-
We use high-quality components without a specific brand name. They are comparable to the components you would expect to find on a mid-range or upper-mid-range guitar.
We do not use branded components because they are considerably more expensive and would significantly increase the price of the course.
If you’re interested in bringing your own, brand-name components, it’s usually not a problem, but get in touch first so we make sure you’re getting parts that will fit.
-
To use alternative pickups, they must be the correct size, fit the existing cavities and be passive.
The pickups we provide are single-coil pickups. However, we cannot guarantee that other Telecaster-style single-coil pickups will fit.
If they do not fit, the pickup cavities and pickguard may need to be modified. There is not enough time during the course to carry out this type of custom modification.
During the course, you will learn how to use a router and make electronic connections, giving you the basic skills needed to make this type of modification to your guitar afterwards.
